In the first 7 days in their brave, new world, the Samsonites initially spend most of their time sleeping and eating. Eyes and ears are sealed until about 10 days, but they have amazing instincts to sense, locate and crawl to Mom. As the week progresses their active period and level activity begins to increase. Individual personalites begin to emerge, indicating what we may see at 8 weeks when the LER is conducted. Red Boy is the most vocal, and the big chow hound; Teal Boy is the spunkiest; and Raspberry girl loves to cuddle. All take well to being held and handled. Calypso has become a supermom; properly protective, but not agressively so. When Uncle Biz came to visit she gently, but assertively herded him away from the whelping box. By the end of the week they have all more than doubled their birth weights, another good indicator of their general health and development. A note about weight/size: early on birth weight and size are NOT meaningful indicators. Shilohs take 36 months to develop to full maturity. The smallest pups in the litter may continue to lag behind their littermates relatively speaking for up to 12 months. By then all things should more or less equal out.
