Chain/Caly April 2009
11 is a very large litter by any standard. 11 healthy pups is a gift. From the start we separated the litter into two groups of five and six respectively with roughly similar size distribution as this makes nursing and monitoring logistics easier, so that the smaller pups can be insured a place at the bar on the fullest teats. The downside is that it increases the work involved since the "teams" need to be rotated every hour or so for nursing, and Caly is almost constantly feeding. Caly's food intake — which had dropped to nearly nothing in the last two days before whelping, and for a day afterward — increases dramatically to keep up milk production. We feed primarily raw at this time in multiple smaller portion per day. Within 24 hours of whelping the pups demonstrated good mobility. They use their only existent scent, smell (eyes and ears will not open for a 10-14 days) to lock on, and then crawl to their food source (Caly).
After feeding we are likely to find them under the whelping box ledges, snuggled around mama, or falling asleep still firmly latched onto a nipple.
Coat type (plush vs. smooth) will not be evident for awhile. Since all are the same consistency of black at this time (they will lighten in varying degrees over time) it is very easy to compare and contrast features at this time and we are very pleased with what we see. Weigh-in is daily evening ritual —and will be for the next 8 weeks — and are gaining weight nicely, another good sign.
Uncles Biz and Rom are curious, arching their necks to see over the pet gates to peer into the whelping box, and having a few brief face to face encounters with a pup. We will introduce the 'tweens (last year's Caly-Samson breeding keepers) individually later on.
